Ajay A. Vaidya passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 9, 2024.
We mourn the loss of Ajay A. Vaidya, after a courageous battle with muscular dystrophy. Born in 1969 to Dr. Aroon and Asha Vaidya, Ajay’s life was a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. He is remembered as a brilliant, witty, and incredibly talented individual whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew him.
Ajay is survived by his devoted mother, Asha; his loving sisters, Amee (husband Tim), Anju (husband Steinar), his cherished nieces, Sierra and Abigail; and his beloved nephew, Mac. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and his relationships with them were deeply rooted in love, respect, and mutual admiration.
A proud alumnus of Brandywine High School, Ajay went on to pursue his passion for the arts at the University of Delaware. There, he earned a Bachelor’ degree in Art History summa cum laude in 1995, followed by a Master’s degree in 2001, also summa cum laude. He was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa. During his master’s program, he served as a curator for the University of Delaware Art Museum and wrote his thesis on Caravaggio, which showcased his deep understanding and appreciation for art.
Despite being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, a condition that gradually reduced his mobility and eventually confined him to a wheelchair, Ajay’s spirit remained unbroken. He continued to create art, drawings, paintings, and writings. Each year, he dedicated himself to producing one masterpiece, including a collage titled “Peace” in many languages, which he gifted to then President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, receiving a personal letter in return.
Ajay’s annual New Year’s letter, which combined family updates with reflections on life and observations of nature, were eagerly awaited by friends and family. His words, often moving readers to tears, reflected his deep insights and unwavering optimism.
Ajay found joy in staying connected with the world through his computer, engaging with friends and family, following current events, watching movies and TV shows with his loved ones, especially his mother. His close relationships extended beyond family to the dedicated nurses who supported him daily, and he became a trusted advisor and an inspiration to many.
Ajay’s legacy is one of resilience, creativity, and an unrelenting dedication to making the most of every moment. His ability to face life’s challenges with grace, courage, and a peaceful acceptance touched everyone he met.
A celebration of Ajay’s remarkable life will be held at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, De 19803 on Sunday March 24, 2024 from 11am-1pm. The family invites all who were touched by Ajay’s spirit to join in honoring his memory.
Ajay’s departure leaves an indelible mark on our hearts, but his legacy of love, creativity and courage will continue to inspire us. Rest in peace, dear Ajay. Your light will forever shine in our memories.
