Adele Akehurst

Adele Margaret Shilko Akehurst passed away peacefully on December 7th, 2023 holding her husband’s hand.

She is survived by her husband Ed Akehurst, siblings Sarah Shilko-Mohr and Martin Shilko, step-children David Akehurst and Helen Akehurst, and step-grandchildren Jami, Sofia, and Kaitlyn.

Adele loved horses and graduated from Averett College with a degree in Equestrian Studies. She had the pleasure of working at some of the most respected horse breeders in the country, and with the United States Equestrian Team.

She also loved martial arts. She earned a blackbelt in Kenpo Karate, and held belts in Tien Shan Pai Kung Fu and Tai Kwan Do. She had a talent for teaching Kenpo to children.

Her ongoing passions were hiking, fine dining, and live music. She spent many years traveling extensively and frequently in pursuit of those activities.

She possessed overwhelming kindness, had a unique, dry sense of humor that was greatly appreciated by those that were sharp enough to catch it, and was an avid reader with profound knowledge across many subject matters.

Funeral Services

Adele requested no services be held. Instead, there will be a Celebration of Life in the Springtime.

Om! I met Adele ji only once, but she was so kind and considerate. This was in 2015 when I believe we last met Pujya Swamiji. There were many students who wished to see Swamiji one last time, Ed-ji and Adele-ji did too. So when it was my turn to see him and I asked you two to come along. However, Adele ji mentioned she would like Swamiji to have his rest and not trouble him. How thoughtful :) Over the years I followed you two on FB, and the lovely destinations (and concerts) you've been to, and of course the lovely family photos - grandkids and all. Such a full life which only makes the loss felt more. My heartfelt condolences to your family _/\_ Om Shanti!

Always enjoyed getting together with Ed and Adele and was so sad to learn of her medical issues. I prayed for her to have the strength to endure the process but respected her for her decision. Her leaving us is a great impact to Ed, her families and friends, but I know she doesn't want us to be sad. Still, I will miss seeing her and enjoying her presence and personality.

Adele was a spirited and wonderful friend for many years. Lots of those years have been through interesting correspondence since there have been 1000 miles between us for nearly 20 recent years. Adele has always had a clever wit and an insatiable curiosity about so many things especially travel. We will all miss sharing some smiles with her. Here's wishing Ed the deepest sympathy for your loss and please remember to recall and celebrate the best of times with Adele.

Namaste dear Ed. Thinking of you and sending prayers at this difficult time. All one can do is to miss Adele. In her own quiet way, she was an inspiration to all in the kind and thoughtful way in which she conducted herself. Ed, you would often say that even though you were actively pursuing Vedanta, Adele effortlessly lived it in the everyday life. It is a great blessing to remember Adele as a natural advaitin. May she gain sadgati with the Lord’s grace. Om
