David Straughn Mumford III, age 78 of Wilmington, DE died Friday, April 22, 2022.
David graduated from Brandywine High School in 1962 where he was an exceptional football player, an All State and Blue Gold recipient. He attended the University of South Carolina on a football scholarship. After college, David married his high school sweetheart and they enjoyed 56 years together. He loved the beach, golfing, Delaware football games, boating and classic cars. Most of all, he loved his family and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He supported his daughters and grandchildren in all of their educational and sporting endeavors – cheering all of them on, often in his loudest voice. David enjoyed spending time with friends, had a great sense of humor and could often be counted on for a good, albeit sometimes long, story.
David’s career spanned over 35 years in insurance, real estate and banking for Bank of Delaware and Delaware Trust Company. David was also a volunteer firefighter at Talleyville Fire Company for many years. He was very proud of his time as a Rehoboth Beach lifeguard and loved to share stories about his many summers at the beach and even helped on a few rescues during family vacations. He loved real estate and could often be found on Sunday’s attending open houses. David was an avid golfer and active member of Wilmington Country Club. He won numerous golf tournaments, had five hole in ones along with his many other golfing accomplishments, but his favorite round of golf was playing Pebble Beach. He will be dearly missed by his loved ones.
David was predeceased by his father, David Mumford (April 1965), his mother Janet Mumford (December 2002), his sister Penelope Barnett (April 2004), brother-in-law Robert Barnett (2012), and his nephew Eric Barnett (December 2018). He is survived by his beloved wife, Gail, his beloved three daughters, Kristin Starr (Michael), Jennifer Kelley (Daniel), Kerri Mumford, his five grandchildren, Matthew Starr, Benjamin Starr, Jack Kelley, Hannah Kelley, and Julia Kelley. He is also survived by his sister Carol Osbun (Ben), sister-in-law, Diane McCraney, nephew David Barnett (Robin), and nieces, Katherine Maki and Kelly Rubicon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Patrick’s Center, 107 E. 14th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801 or the Sunday Breakfast Mission, 110 Poplar Street, Wilmington DE 19801.
