Stanley T. Lamar, of Hockessin, DE passed away early Sunday morning, February 13, 2022 at the age of 88.
Stan was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Among those celebrating his life and remembering his infectious smile are his loving wife, the former Margot Mimmack of Buffalo, NY; his two sons, Tom of Moscow, ID and Steve (Heidi) of Fairfax, VA; his sister Patricia Geoffroy of Overland Park, KS; his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The youngest of five children, Stan was born in Pueblo, CO in 1933 to Ralph Franklin “Husky” and Sara Avis Clayton Lamar. After graduating from high school in Topeka, KS, Stan went on to earn a BS in Chemical Engineering at Yale University in 1955.
In the fall of 1955, he went to work for DuPont, launching a 36-year career that took him from Niagara Falls, NY – where he met his wife of nearly 63 years – to Wilmington, DE – where he and Margot raised two boys and a dog.
Upon retirement from DuPont, Stan spent more than three decades as a tax advisor with H&R Block, where he helped thousands of clients in the Wilmington area and around the country navigate complex tax forms and legal requirements.
Stan was actively involved in many community and volunteer activities wherever he went. An Eagle Scout who inspired his two grandsons to achieve the same honor, Stan participated in camping and scouting activities throughout his life. For 35 years, he served as treasurer of Concord Presbyterian Church, where he also held other lay positions. In 1999, Stan was recognized as “Volunteer Extraordinaire” for his 25 years of service to the Lake Naomi Club in the Poconos, where he was on the Board of Governors and served as Commodore of the Sailing Association.
In his spare time, Stan could often be found on the links or in the Grille at the DuPont Country Club, sailing Lasers at Lake Naomi, or rooting for his beloved Bulldogs at the Yale Bowl. He delighted many with his beautiful tenor voice, singing with the Yale Glee Club in college, the Interpreters in Wilmington, and the Yale Alumni Chorus in adventures throughout Asia, Latin America, Europe, and Australia. An amateur genealogist and avid collector of memorabilia, Stan enjoyed researching and talking about family histories, and loved discovering Karymors and other playground equipment produced by his father’s company – RF Lamar & Co. – throughout the Midwest.
A celebration of Stan’s incredible life and all the people he touched will take place – after the tax season – on Monday, May 9, 2022 at 11:00 am at Concord Presbyterian Church, 1800 Fairfax Boulevard, Wilmington, DE 19803. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stan’s name may be made to the American Heart Association at http://www.heart.org.
