Katherine M. Glazier

Katherine “Cass” Graney Glazier, age 87, passed away on April 11, 2017 at her home in Wilmington.

Cass was a native Wilmingtonian. She attended St. Paul Elementary School and then St. Elizabeth High School where she met a group of girls who remained her closest friends throughout her life. After high school, Cass completed the secretarial program at Beacom Business College. She began her career as a secretary in the administration office of the Wilmington Public Schools. After taking time away from her career to raise her 3 small children, Cass returned to work as a secretary for the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington Office of Education. After retiring from the Diocese, she worked in the administrative office at Ursuline Academy, and then in the rectory of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish.

Cass loved growing up in the city of Wilmington. She shared her memories of sledding down Second Street in winter and swimming at Canby Pool in summer. She especially loved spending time with her sisters, Jean and Marie, and all of their friends on Saturdays at the Ace Movie Theater. She was a child of the Great Depression and recalled neighbors coming to her family home on Harrison Street to speak to her father, who was a city councilman, about registering for the city-funded coal program that provided help to those who could not afford to heat their homes. Her most vivid memories were of her older brothers, Joe and Bill, as they left to fight in Europe during World War II. She also shared her fond memories of her beloved little brother Hubert.

During the summer of 1952, Cass took a trip with friends to Virginia Beach, Virginia where she met Edward Glazier of Bingham¬ton, New York, who was on leave from the Fort Lee, Virginia Army Base. Cass and Ed were married over 54 years until Ed’s death in 2008. They raised 3 children in South Graylyn Crest in North Wilmington. Cass loved her children deeply, but she also loved when they moved away, so that she could travel to visit them. Cass loved a good road trip. It could be near or far; she just loved a little get-away.

Cass died peacefully at home with family around her. She is survived by her son Edward Glazier Jr, of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, her daughter Marijane Glazier of La Quinta, California, and her daughter Ann-Marie Glazier of Wilmington.
