David Barry Maglin

David Barry Maglin passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on August 11, 2021 at the age of 95 at his home in Wilmington, DE, where he spent his last 15 months of his life being lovingly taken care of by his son, Barry, and daughter-in-law, Madelyn. He was born in Rhode Island to Samuel L. Maglin and Louisa Maria Johnson, and was later placed along with two younger brothers, Samuel and Richard, and three older sisters, June, Hope, and Ginnie, in an orphanage in RI, were he stayed until he entered the Navy at 17 years old. He trained as a marine and served in the Navy on the USS Arkansas where he earned a number of metals & citations such as the Atlantic Theater of War and the Pacific Award. While in the Navy, he spent time in Hawaii, played taps for dignitaries in DC, and once played in the band for the 32nd president’s wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, at Carnegie Hall. Later, he graduated from the Navy School of Music and Berklee School of Music, where he studied the French horn and the trumpet. After graduation, he played in bands with Count Basie, Stan Kenton and others. While at Berklee, he befriended his roommate, Quincy Jones, and they enjoyed spending time playing cards and Sunday dinners together.

David met his wife, Nancy L. Andersen, at a USO dance and, upon completing his seven year military stint, they married and had three children: Barry, Connie and Mark. Although his passion was music, he went into the jewelry business, where he became the owner of Warwick Jewelers and a watchmaker until his retirement at the age of 91. During this time he played trumpet for the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra. David had a positive outlook on life and compassion for others which brought friendship, business, and lifelong happiness. It was a special to him knowing 4 generations of the same families would come back to the store. His sons followed in his jewelry footsteps and continue to this day. David enjoyed traveling with Nancy overseas, to Florida, and to Cape Cod. His brother, Samuel, was his best friend and frequent travel companion to the Cape in the fall for fishing and traveling to Thailand to visit their brother, Richard. He is survived by his sons: Barry Maglin (Madelyn) and Mark Maglin (Kirsten); and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and friends!

There will be a small, private, family celebration of life ceremony held in New England in his honor.
