Barbara C. Roewe

Barbara Clancy Roewe, age 89, of Hockessin, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Cokesbury Village.

Barbara was born in Washington, D.C., daughter of the late Thomas M. and Anna King Clancy. She grew up in Washington with a house full of relatives and music. She met her husband, George Roewe at Wilson Teacher’s College as he was looking for a pianist to accompany his clarinet playing. He found an accompanist for life. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Delaware. She taught english, journalism and was a reading specialist at Alexis I. Dupont High School for 27 years.

Barbara served on the board of directors for the Delaware Press Association (DPA), The Delaware Institute for Arts in Education, The MidAtlantic Chamber Music Society, The First Unitarian Church and Kids Count. In 2008, she was the recipient of the communicator of achievement award, which is the highest honor the DPA bestows on its members. The award recognizes exemplary service to the DPA and the National Federation of Press Women. She was the president of the Delaware Press Association for 2 years and a facilitator for the YWCA sponsored high school study circles. She was also a Sunday school teacher for 30 years at the First Unitarian Church, where she served as music committee chair, long range planning committee and social justice working group chair. She served as chair for the lecture committee at Cokesbury Retirement Village and the Academy of Life-Long Learning.

She performed countless hours as a sing-a-long accompanist at retirement homes and played trombone in numerous community bands.

Barbara is survived by her 3 children, Jay Roewe and his wife Liz, Wynn Roewe Davis and her husband Bill, and Scott Roewe, her 3 grandchildren, Christopher Roewe, Nicholas Roewe and William Scott Davis Jr.

A Memorial Service will be on Sunday, August 22, 2021 at 1:30PM, Cokesbury Village, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, Delaware, 19707. For attendance and Covid-19 protocols please contact Chandler Funeral Home, 302-478-7100.
