James Graham Waddell

James Graham Waddell, 88, died peacefully at The Country House on October 7, 2016 after a long illness.

Jim was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1928.  He was the son of Irene Boehm and James Waddell, a biochemist.  He spent most of his childhood in Metuchen, New Jersey, acquiring an avid interest in magic, playing the accordion and locksmithing.

He graduated from the Pingry School, Phillips Andover Academy and Harvard University and then went to medical school at McGill University.  He completed his residency at the Delaware Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware.

He then spent two years as a captain in the Army with the 31st Infantry Battlegroup, 7th Division in Korea, and returned to Wilmington to practice general medicine with Millard Squires, MD.

In 1960, he married Janet Williams Holmes and they moved to Washington, DC, where he did a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Washington Hospital Center.  In 1965 they returned to Wilmington, where he practiced orthopaedic surgery for the next 32 years.

Dr. Waddell loved sailing on the Chesapeake, summers spent on Cape Cod, scuba diving, paddle tennis, and bicycling.  His optimism and kind heart will not be forgotten by those who knew him.

Dr. Waddell was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Greenville Country Club, and the Orleans Yacht Club in Orleans, MA.  He was on the board of the Little Sisters of the Poor and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity.

He is survived by his wife Janet, his daughter Ann W. Miller and her husband Richard E. Miller, his son William Graham Waddell and daughter-in-law Teresa Lynn Waddell, sisters Betsy W. Benzel and Jane W. Baker and three grandchildren, Louisa P. Miller, Calista S. and William G. Waddell, Jr. (Liam).

The family would like to thank the staff at The Country House for their fine care of Jim and family and friends who also helped by visiting him.
