Peter “Pete” J. Gray Jr. of White Plains, NY and Hockessin, DE passed away on April 1, 2018 in his home at The Summit while surrounded by his loving family. Born in Binghamton, NY, and raised in White Plains NY, he was a resident of White Plains, NY for over 60 years. After graduating from White Plains High School, he married his high school sweetheart, Frances Shea. As a Post-Korean War Veteran, he proudly served the US Army as a non-commissioned Military Police officer in Germany. Upon returning home from the service, Pete wore many hats in his early years to support his family. He worked full time as a Motor Vehicle Inspector conducting road tests, as well as keeping several part time jobs. He held various positions some of which included driving taxis, working at his father’s ESSO station and climbing telephone poles.
In the early 90’s Pete retired as a District Director of NY State Motor Vehicles and he and mom purchased a second home in South Carolina. When he was not enjoying time in SC golfing and having family and friends visit, you would find him volunteering for the Lord’s Pantry of White Plains, NY.
For the past 20 years, Pete made Delaware his home. In recent years, Pete spent his days devouring word puzzles and blessing visitors with his quiet presence and dry humor. He enjoyed keeping in touch with friends and family through cards and phone calls. For those of them that knew him you could always count on Pete’s Christmas card to be the first you received. Pete loved his family. He was most proud of his children and grandkids.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of forty-five years, Frances Gray, and two sons, Michael and Peter. He is survived by his children, Franny Gray, Susan (Sam) Costa, James Gray, Jeffrey (Pam) Gray, Nancy (Dan) Smith and ten grandchildren, Kevin, Matt, Samantha, Nick, Sean, Courtney, Michael, Mark, Morgan and Alex.
A celebration of life will be Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 2:00–4:00 p.m. at The Summit in Hockessin, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in mid-May at St. Bernard’s White Plains, NY. He will be laid to eternal rest in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
