John Cogan, age 80, of Greenville, DE, passed away on February 14, 2018 at home. Born in Newark, NJ, he was the son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth (Brawley) Cogan, both born and raised in Scotland. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Rev. Andrew Cogan, of the Metuchen Diocese, NJ.
John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Catherine; his son, Rev. James Cogan of the Venice Diocese, FL; his daughter, Ann O’Rourke, son-in-law, Gerard O’Rourke, and their sons, Jerry, Liam, Jack, Brendan, Patrick, Declan and Aidan of Chadds Ford, PA; his daughter, Patricia Shaposky, son-in-law, John Shaposky, and their daughters, Megan, Katie, Annie and Caroline of Greenville, DE.
John earned his BA degree from Seton Hall University in Classical Languages followed by two M.Ed. degrees in Administration and Guidance. He furthered his studies as a scholarship recipient to Exeter College of the University of Oxford in England. He began his career in education as a high school Latin and English teacher followed by many years as Director of Guidance. He held positions at Middletown Township High School, NJ, Lakewood High School, NJ, International School of Bangkok, Thailand, Pennsville Memorial High School, NJ, and the American School of Kuwait.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 10:30am at St. Joseph on the Brandywine, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville, DE. Family will greet friends at the Church beginning at 9:30am. Burial will follow Mass in St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery.
