Eugene “Gene” Olson

Gene was born in Garden City, Michigan in 1934, and died peacefully at home on January 15, 2025.

He was greatly loved and had a positive impact on many lives throughout his life, especially his wife of 49 years, Lydia, kids, Randy, Cathryn (David, daughters Lindsay & Chelsea), Rick, Tracy (Kim & daughter Sarah and son Adam), Rod, Dave (Heather, son Connor), and Dane (Cynthia, sons Noah, Steven & Daniel, daughter Katherine), and several great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his siblings, Bob, Pat and Liz, children, Randy and Tracy.

He served in the Navy on the USS Roanoke and developed a love for being on the water, which continued throughout his life.  He volunteered with the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 30 years in Michigan and Delaware.  He spent many years working for Wayne County General in Michigan as a computer programmer.  After retirement, he and Lydia moved from Plymouth, Michigan to Middletown, Delaware.

Gene was kind, gentle, thoughtful, funny, and was liked by everyone he met because of his easygoing attitude.   He was a teacher and mentor to everyone he knew, even when he wasn’t trying to be.  He could build or fix anything, throw a wicked knuckleball, and adapt to advancing computer and phone technology with lightening speed.  He was an avid woodworker, fisherman, boater, and fan of Detroit sports teams and University of Michigan football.   He was beloved by his family and he will be missed!

The family will hold a private celebration of life in March and Gene will be interred at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Helen Graham Cancer Center.
