Alice Severance, 75, of Wilmington, Delaware passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2024. She approached every interaction as an opportunity to show kindness. She was the daughter of beloved mother, Dorothy Horgan, and father, Thomas Horgan, and sister to her “army buddies,” Sue Woodall, Jean Glassman, Bayard Horgan, Dan Horgan, Charlie Horgan, and Betsy Scharr. She was a wonderful wife to Sam Severance III, and an incredible mother to Sam Severance IV and Laura Severance, and a beloved “ma” to her grandchildren, Juliana and Connor.
For ten years, Alice worked for attorney Ned Carpenter, whom she deeply respected. She returned to school later in life, completing her bachelor’s degree at Springfield College. She spent eight years in Taiwan, raising her children and enjoying much laughter traveling through Southeast Asia with family and friends. She committed much of her life to deeply meaningful volunteer work, including serving on the board at the Community Services Center in Taiwan, caring for infants at a Taiwanese orphanage, mentoring students in Wilmington and Kennett, and working with ARC in Wilmington and a homeless shelter in Philadelphia. She was kindness embodied.
She loved the treasures she collected in Asia, the anticipation of a snowfall, a moonlit ocean, and a handful of dogs (especially Sheba and Mr. Bear). She was very proud that her children grew into adults with character and compassion. She was a strong woman who aspired to live her life by the last words of the Buddha, “Strive on with diligence.”
A private ceremony will be held in the new year.
