Susan Y. Krewatch

Susan Read Yerkes Krewatch, age 82, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.

She was born in New York City to Leonard A. Yerkes Junior and Doris Kelley Pool. She was the third of four children. At the age of five she moved with her family to Wilmington, Delaware, where she attended Tower Hill School. She then moved back to New York City and graduated from Chapin School. From there she went to Bradford College in Massachusetts, and after to the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School.

Once back in Delaware, she began working at the Bank of Delaware although it did not bring her joy. Susan left the Bank of Delaware and went to work for Dr. William O. LaMotte. During this time, she married William V. Krewatch Jr., and they had two sons together. She would eventually find a job within the U.S. Postal Service that brought her happiness as the Postmaster in Yorklyn, DE.

Sadly, her beloved son, Jonathan, predeceased her after losing his battle with mental health. Susan was a proud proponent of suicide prevention in Jonathan’s honor and was a part of a support group following his passing. The members of that support group remained friends over the years.

Susan is survived by her son, Trip Krewatch, her sisters, Martha Eustis, Julia Wald, sister, Meg Lenher.

A service to celebrate Susan’s life will be held on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 2:00pm at Chandler Funeral Home in Hockessin, DE.  A visitation will be held prior at 1:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the Jonathan R. Krewatch Memorial Fund, care of the Delaware Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1636, Wilmington, DE, 19899.
