Alexander Christian Riley

Alex Riley, age 34, of Wilmington, DE, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

Alex was a graduate of A.I. du Pont High School and Harford Community College.

He loved all sports but especially the game of baseball. From a young age he was a student of the game, playing t-ball, Babe Ruth baseball at Piedmont in Hockessin and A.I. du Pont high school, continuing on at Harford Community College. He played on various tournament teams and travel baseball teams. In 2007, he was named First Team All-State first baseman as a member of the A.I. Tigers, and while at Harford Community College, First Team All-Region centerfielder. He enjoyed playing in the Delaware Semi-Pro league, his adult-league softball team and recreational basketball leagues, and was happiest in the outdoors, whether he was on a baseball diamond or on a walk. Alex was a man of few words but when he shared his thoughts or cracked a joke, there was usually laughter to follow.

Alex was employed by Amazon and later he and his cousin Peter formed To and Fro Moving Co.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Margaret and Theodore Bacher and his paternal grandfather John C. Riley, Sr.

He is survived by his parents Martin and Suzanne (Bacher) Riley, his sister Emily (Riley) Spear and her husband Greg Spear and nieces Riley and Logan Spear; aunts and uncles, Jane and James Conlon, Helen and Jack Riley, Lynn Riley and Wade Catts; cousins Pierce Conlon (Kim), Peter Conlon (Rebecca), Kathy Foster (Carle), Allie Foster and Shannon Bennett (Corinne).

I am so terribly sorry for your loss. Alex and I became very close in middle school. Middle school can be very difficult, your body is changing and the social dynamics really start to take shape. Alex was right there with me through a lot of these changes. These were memorable times, and honestly the best times. I knew I could be myself with Alex. I don't think I would have the self confidence and self esteem I have without his influence. We loved to laugh. I apologize but I think I was a big influence on his finger snapping and use of obscure vocabulary words in 7th-8th grade. He and I really bonded over our love of Philadelphia sports. Every time I see the Eagles logo, I get a little Alex. We used to change 1 letter in an athletes name to reflect how well, or lets face it as Philly fans, poorly a player played. Todd Stinkston (Pinkston) and James Trash (Thrash) were the Eagles Wide Receivers the before Terrell Owens came to Philadelphia. I remember sitting in homeroom and gushing over the new and improved roster with Alex. This is one of many memories I have of Alex. I hope he knows how lucky I was to have someone like him growing up.

When I met Alex in middle school we became instant friends. Making friends was easy for Alex, or “Riley” as he was known by all his friends. He was funny, kind, honest and incredibly easy to be around. He had a calming presence about him that I cherished when we would hang out. No matter what was happening, Riley was Riley, and we all loved him for that. Anytime we were together I knew it would be full of laughter and stress free. He was a great friend. Riley and I shared many memories together from our teenage years in school through working together and remaining friends in adulthood. His loss is truly painful. I will always be able to look back on our time and smile knowing that I was blessed by having spent time with such a special person. My most sincere condolences to all his family and friends. I think about Riley everyday and he will never be forgotten. He was a joy and I am grateful and honored to be able to say he was my friend.
