Craig Joseph Russell

Craig Joseph Russell, age 77 passed away in his home on August 12, 2024. He was predeceased by the love of his life, wife Doris, and his parents Ruth and Oscar G. Russell, Jr.

He was the devoted husband of Doris Rogers Russell, with whom he shared 42 years of love and companionship. Together, they made their home in Wilmington, DE where they enjoyed life and so many wonderful memories, surrounded by family, friends and their beloved pets. He delighted in vegetable gardening, classic cars, home building projects and venturing on spontaneous road trips.

Craig is survived by his daughter Melissa, his son-in-law Buck Payne, as well as many treasured family, friends and kitties.

A graduate of Mount Pleasant High School in 1964, Craig later enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Vietnam War. He always spoke of the friends he made during this time and how he enjoyed visiting their hometowns. After the War, he briefly attended classes at the University of Delaware and then purchased and managed a gas station.  He later worked at Greggo & Ferrera, where he spent over three decades in construction.  He was a member of Teamsters Local 326 and truly found a brotherhood within the organization.

His love for animals was deep; he had many treasured companions through the years, including Holly, Blackie, Love, Buttons, Babbette, Ruckus and many others. He also enjoyed observing the hijinks of the neighborhood raccoons and was known to leave them treats and spring water in the evenings. He loved all animals.

Deeply loved and admired by family, friends and staff members of local eateries, Craig will be missed by many.

This was a very sad day for our family. Craig and Doris always made wonderful memories for our children when they were young. I will miss him, but take solace that he is now with my beloved sister.

Melissa, I am saddened to hear of the passing of your dad. I have so many wonderful memories of being at your house growing up. Fourth of July fireworks, pool, sleepovers, the carrot juice he made for us ( freshly juiced from his juicer) I'm sending you my love and prayers. Love always. Mary Kennard (Quinn)
