Gabriel Jeffrey Faison Magnusson

Gabriel Magnusson left us all too soon on July 10, 2024. Gabriel loved life and packed more into his almost 14 years than most could in a lifetime. Gabriel was adopted in the summer of 2011 after his parents were blessed with his custody in the autumn of 2010.

Gabriel loved so deeply and freely. He never met a stranger and made a positive impact on those he encountered every time he walked into a room. From the youngest age he was entirely at home with his peers, adults, or mixed company. Those who knew him were family to him and he only saw the best in everyone.

He attended Wilmington Manor Elementary School from Kindergarten through 5^th grade and McCullough Middle School for 6^th through 8^th. He was an avid lover of music playing baritone in the school band and drums at home. He played soccer in 7^th and 8^th grades as a goalie and wrestled in 8^th. Wrestling turned into his true athletic calling and he was looking forward to his freshman year at William Penn High School. He loved the camaraderie of team sports and was always the first to cheer on and encourage his teammates.

Gabriel was obsessed with his dirt bike. He spent many hours cruising around his mom’s Maryland property, creating ruts, getting dirty and most importantly: doing wheelies. He was somehow more at home on one wheel than 2. Any 2-wheeled vehicle was fair game for him. He rode all over New Castle with his friends on his BMX bike, preferably only on the back wheel. He also enjoyed mountain biking with his Pop who he rode with many hours and laps around the state parks of New Castle County.

Gabriel’s second home was at the beach. All summer long he was found surfing at Rambler Beach in Wildwood Crest, NJ. He spent countless hours with his grandparents there on his longboard. He also surfed and boogie boarded the waves of The Outer Banks in the late summers with his Mom and Step-Dad.

Gabriel Magnusson is survived by Elizabeth (Liz) and Raymond (Ray) Shupe, his mom and step-dad, and his step siblings, Ian, Maddox, Emmit and Hannah. He is also survived by his father, Joshua Magnusson and his partner, Christine Smith; paternal grandparents, Bo and Tory Magnusson and maternal grandparents, Jeff and Gayle Tompkins as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Gabriel’s family will hold a Celebration of Life on Saturday, July 20 at 2pm at Skyline United Methodist Church: 3100 Skyline Drive Wilmington, DE 19808. In lieu of flowers donations can be made, in memory of Gabriel Magnusson, to the McCullough Middle School Athletics Program at colonialschooldistrict.org or mailed to 318 E Basin Rd New Castle, DE 19720.

It's still hard to believe Gabe isn't here no more, I remember when Josh and Liz adopted him and how little he was. Then to the growing kid I'd saw next door whenever hanging out with Josh. I'll miss hearing that kid calling his Dad "Pop," first time I think I ever heard someone call their father that. So many other memories over the years, he was a great actor too especially for a kid and his first movie. When directing him in the scene his character 'Max' said a swear word as a reaction and even though his Pop was totally okay with him saying it. I remember the day I saw Gabriel in 6th grade in my English class, he would always try and make everyone laugh but people would just make fun of him I didn't know why until I found out that he had 3 fingers on one hand, but that didn't stop him from being himself I wanted to have his confidence just like him, I became close friends with him and we would hang out every time we got a chance to, Throughout 8th me and Gabriel would try and go to the same sport and then we got into wrestling, everytime we would be on the mat I could see him trying to push himself to his limits and everytime he would lose a match he would try even harder at practice. Then he had his first win, the face he had when he won was priceless. Then he would try and take some of the heavy weights (including me) down but he couldn't, that didn't stop him from trying. This breaks my heart! I never knew this boy, but I will say my son is going into seventh grade this year in McCullough. Last year, Gabriel didn’t even know my son and signed my son‘s yearbook and was very nice to him throughout the year. I know this is very late for this but I feel this is right. Gabe was someone I could always count on for anything to talk, for help or even just to laugh Gabe was always there. I didn’t know him long but he was basically my brother, me and him always talked about how much we missed surfing with each other as-well as riding dirt bikes. Surfing with Gabe was probably the highlight of my summer it was always a great time and he was always so “stoked” as we surfers like to say. I didn’t know Gabe very well, but I could tell he was an amazing person. He had a radiant smile that you couldn’t help but smile yourself. I surfed with him in New Jersey on Rambler Road many times. I talked to him when we were out in the waves. He was always so stoked to be out there in the water even when the waves were smaller. He’d say they were huge no matter what. He always got me excited.
