Laura Baumann

Laura Máthé Baumann, aged 94, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on Monday, May 20, 2024 after a short illness.

Laura was a caring, loving, and wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was devoted to her husband, family, and extended family.

After leaving her home in Kolozsvár, Hungary in 1944, she spent several years in a displaced persons camp in Villach, Austria, where she met her husband, Julius Baumann Sr. In 1951 the couple and their first two children immigrated to Wilmington under the sponsorship of the city’s First Unitarian Church.

Shortly after arriving, Laura started a successful employment agency, utilizing her entrepreneurial spirit, resourcefulness, and passion to help others succeed. At the same time, she continued over the years to build and raise a family of five children.

Laura is survived by her brother Miklós Máthé of Lewes, DE; her children, Laura Beitman of Newark, DE, Julius Baumann Jr. of Ridgeland, SC, Camilla Mancari of Hockessin, DE, Veda Howell of TN, and Phil Baumann of Lafayette Hill, PA; and her 8 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service to celebrate Laura’s life will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 11:00am at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N Dupont Hwy, New Castle, DE 19720.

    Marsha Atkison writes,
I just now learned of Laura's passing and am so sorry that I wasn't able to send this note sooner and attend her service. I had the privilege of assisting Laura in her home for several years. She was a treasure. She was sweet, kind, and caring. She was so proud of her family and would often share pictures and stories about her grandchildren and great grandchildren. I shall remember her with great fondness and am so thankful that I had the opportunity to know her. My life is richer for having known her.
