Geraldine “Gerry” Crock, age 89, the younger daughter of Ernest and Bertha Phillips, passed away Tuesday morning, March 19, 2024 after a brief illness. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA but moved to West Virginia when she was two. She grew up the proverbial “coal-miner’s daughter” as her dad worked for several coal mines in central WV. After graduating from Monongah High School in 1953, Gerry went on to earn her B.A. in business from WVU in 1957. She then attended West Virginia Wesleyan and earned her teaching degree. Gerry came east after college and found a job at the former Foulk Road Elementary School. It was here that she met the love of her life, Ken Crock they went on to get married in 1962. They both enjoyed long, 30+ year careers in the Brandywine School District, retiring in 1991.
Gerry had two things that guided her life: Faith and Family. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially the trips to the Jersey shore each summer. Gerry was a long-time member of Concord Presbyterian Church in North Wilmington and was active there in many roles, including serving as a deacon for several years. Later in life, she truly treasured the groups of friends she built over the years, from her teaching pals to her church groups and the swim gals at the Brandywine YMCA.Gerry’s true joy was spending time with her five grandkids. She never missed a concert, sports event, play or awards ceremony.
Gerry was predeceased by her parents, Ernest and Bertha Phillips and her husband Ken. She is survived by her sons Karl (Jennifer) Crock of Wilmington, DE and Kurt Crock of Mt. Vernon, IA; grandkids Nathan Crock of Worcester, MA; Philip Crock of Wilmington, DE; and Josephine, Ellen and Benjamin Crock of Mt. Vernon, IA; her sister Ernestine of Oak Hill, WV; first cousins Harriet, Linda and Doris.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 from 6-8pm at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. A service in honor of Geraldine will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at 10am at the Concord Presbyterian Church, 1800 Fairfax Blvd, Wilmington, DE 19803. Burial will be private.
