Rita DeFiore Tigani

Rita DeFiore Tigani was born on December 8, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 24, 2024. She was predeceased by her devoted husband Joseph P. Tigani, her brothers, Joseph DeFiore and Robert DeFiore and her sister, Linda Trusk.

She was the second of four children of Clara (Perella) and Attilio DeFiore and is survived by her daughter Joan Beard and husband Samuel, two sons Paul Tigani and wife Mary, Jeffrey Tigani and wife Nina, and brother-in-law James Trusk. Rita was very proud of her four grandchildren Morgan Beard, Joseph Tigani, Jamie Tigani and Jack Tigani, with whom she was able to spend a great deal of time.

She was a graduate of Wilmington High School and later attended The Philadelphia College of Pharmacology where she received her degree.

Shortly thereafter she opened her own Pharmacy in Wilmington where she worked for a number of years until she married and then turned her attention to becoming a stay at home mother to her three children. Her Catholic faith was important throughout her life, and she regularly attended St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church.

Rita was an avid golfer at Wilmington Country Club and a duplicate bridge Life Master. She taught ceramics and was an accomplished seamstress. She especially enjoyed games of trivia that challenged her mind. She was known for her sense of style and always looked younger than her years.

Even later in life she had a great ability to “keep up with the times” and was always well versed in current affairs. Her independent spirit will be greatly missed by all who enjoyed being in her company.

Our family wishes to express our gratitude to the nurses and staff at Stonegates Health Center for the outstanding and loving care Rita has received for the past four years.

Dear Joanie and Family, The Winchester Family sends their sincere condolences for the loss of your Mother. She was a favorite of our Dad's and they spent many happy dinners together in the Stonegates dining room. I'd like to think that the two of them and your Dad and my Mom will be getting together once again for some happy times up above. Fondly, Paula

    Daniel K. Statnekov writes,
Rita was already out of school when, along with my family, I moved across the street from Rita's parent's house on Washington Street Extension in 1949. Although I knew Rita's sister slightly, it was her two older brothers whose annual hunting expedition with their father which drew my rapt and envious attention each November when the two brothers laid out all their equipment for their upcoming hunt on the lawn between the garage and the tall hedge on Washington Street which, except for an opening for the driveway, shielded the DeFiori family's lovely stone home from view. Especially intriguing to the boy's (my) eyes were the long rifles with their polished wooden stocks propped against the fender of a car or pickup (I don't remember which) and had there been any possible way for me to hide amidst the jumble of gear being readied by the two young men in preparation for their expedition, I'd of crawled beneath a tarp with a few sandwiches and a bottle of water to tide me over and gone with them on the adventure which lay ahead. No doubt, Rita returned to her parent's and sibling's home for an occasional Sunday or Holiday dinner which perhaps included a venison steak from one of her father's and brother's hunts but other than my distant view of Rita's brothers and her father and my slight acquaintance with her sister, Linda, I'm sorry to say I don't remember meeting Rita nor did I know her family beyond the above account. I suppose that seeing Rita's obituary in today's Sunday newspaper and learning that her siblings and, of course, her parents have all passed away brings to a close an already long-past era in my own life but the excitement and boyhood treasure of the above memory has prompted me to write this note for the benefit of anyone from the generations which followed who might find it of interest. Best wishes and my sincere condolences to all, Daniel Statnekov (My name when all of the above occurred was "Danny Stat.")

Dear Paul and Family: I just now learned of your Mom's passing. My deepest sympathy and prayers for your family. I always remember Mrs. T as an elegant, beautiful lady, but I wasn't aware of her entrepreneurial and pharmacological accomplishments. Wow, a truly remarkable lady. May God Bless Mom and your family.
