Bernard Vincent Del Guidice (Bernie), age 81, of Glen Mills Pennsylvania, formerly of Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at his home with his wife Joan, daughter Danielle, granddaughter Jessica and sister-in-law Lynne Civitella by his side.
Bernie was born in 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late Bernard A. Del Guidice and Mary DiVincenzo Del Guidice. He graduated from Monsignor Bonner Catholic High School in 1961. He completed educational studies at Philadelphia Wireless Technical Institute earning certificates in air conditioning & refrigeration services, radar operation & maintenance, and radio engineering. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in April 1970 at the rank of Sergeant.
After working for the Admiral Repair Company as a TV serviceman, he advanced to become a long-time dedicated employee until his retirement, from Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). He worked there as a senior design engineer specializing in new railcar programs.
He was an active member of many professional and social clubs such as The American Society of Inventors (he was ahead of his time, always looking to advance technology) and The Italics for Musicians (as he identified most with jazz music and Frank Sinatra ballads).
Bernie was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He used his engineering and inventive talents to build their family home in Glen Mills, PA where they continue to gather for Sunday dinners. On almost 2 acres, Bernie spent his retirement years gardening and woodworking. Let us not forget a favorite Bernie-ism, “Can’t get the job done right unless you have the right tools!”
He especially loved teaching and laughing with his grandchildren, especially spending time around his extensive model train collection. Bernie was blessed to hold his newborn great-grandson just days before his passing. His heart was as big as his smile. His opinion was as strong as his love and loyalty for his family and friends. He was a shining example of God’s light to others.
He is predeceased by parents and his sisters, Rosemary Alessandrini Higgins (James), and Lucy Volpe (Robert). Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Joan (Guaglianone) Del Guidice, his son, Bernard Vincent Del Guidice, Jr., (Tina) of Hull, MA, his daughter, Danielle Matruder (Mark) of Wilmington, DE. his grandchildren; Theresa, Michael, Andrew, Monica and Jessica Gladu (Corey) and his great-grandson Westley. He was a loving brother-in-law, uncle and cousin. He was loved by so many.
A viewing will be held on Monday, February 5, 2024 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. A service will begin at 12:30 pm. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Smile Train.
