Edward Stewart, 74, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 with his family by his side in Accent Care Hospice Center at Wilmington Hospital.
Born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1949, he was the only child of Thomas E. and Doris (Mitchell) Stewart. Ed (or Eddie as he was known to many) graduated from John Dickinson High School (class of ’67) where he played multiple sports. Many will remember his spinning records at local dances as a member of SelecTronS DJs.
Ed met his wife Marie Mauk at the University of Delaware where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He also served in the Delaware Air National Guard.
After graduating from UD, Ed taught mathematics at William Penn High School where he coached football, baseball, and girls’ basketball. His professional career in the Information Technology field, beginning with the DuPont Company and later with Computer Sciences Corporation, took him to various foreign locations. During the 1990’s, the family and he lived in Mexico City and London. Upon retiring from corporate life, Ed became Director of Technology at Ursuline Academy.
Early in their marriage, Ed and Marie were renovation pioneers in Trinity Vicinity, Wilmington where they made life-long friends. Shortly thereafter, the Stewarts and friends embarked on another adventure “moving up the hill to the gracious and spacious” houses in the historic Cool Springs neighborhood. The Stewart family ultimately settled in another city neighborhood (Rockford Park Manor) and their beach home in Lewes, DE.
Ed continued his life-long passion for sports by playing rugby (flanker #7) during the early days of the Wilmington Rugby Football Club. As maturity (and sensibility) set in, he made the switch to long-distance running and competed in marathons. After listening again to his body, his lifetime sport became cycling. He was a natural athlete who enjoyed coaching many of his children’s sports teams and being co-president with Marie of the Booster Club at the American School in London.
Ed’s memory will always be cherished by his devoted wife of 51 years, Marie Mauk Stewart and his three adoring children, Andrew E.H. Stewart, and his wife Lisa; T. Edward (Ted) Stewart and his fiancée Kristen Schindler; and Alanna Piser and her husband Thomas R. (TR) Piser. He is also survived by his three great joys, grandchildren Charlie Stewart, Catherine Piser and Caroline Piser.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 11:00 am at St. Ann Church; 2013 Gilpin Avenue; Wilmington, DE 19806. Interment will be private.
In memory of Ed, please consider donations to The Music School of Delaware 4101 Washington Street, Wilmington, DE 19802; or Lewy Body Dementia Association, Inc., 912 Killian Hill Road S.W.; Lilburn, GA 30047.
