George Bowdoin

In loving memory of George Bowdoin, aged 94, who passed away on January 4, 2024, at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE. George spent his final year at Ware Presbyterian in Oxford, PA, where he cherished his interactions with the staff, whom he fondly referred to as his friends. His days were brightened by caring smiles, sweet conversations and strolls through the halls, indulging in unlimited cookies and coffee.

Born in 1929 in Philadelphia, PA, George dedicated three years to the Air Force before transitioning to White Plains, New York, where he worked various jobs in construction. Settling in New Rochelle, NY, after a New Year’s Day engagement in 1967, he married Sylvia Kent on April 21, 1968, at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Rochelle, NY, followed by a reception at Lido’s in the Bronx.

Together with Sylvia and their three children, they relocated to Newark, Delaware, on July 4, 1980, to be closer to extended family. George established his own business, George Bowdoin Painting, Inc., finding immense joy in his work until his retirement.

George’s legacy is defined by his unwavering devotion to family, celebrating a remarkable 52-year marriage with Sylvia until her unexpected passing in 2020. He loved to garden and cook. When not with his grandchildren, he showered boundless affection upon his dogs and granddogs, considering them cherished members of the family, discreetly sharing leftovers, and orchestrating special Sunday brunches just for them. George had captivating stories to share, illuminating the adventures of his past. Quick to shed a tear when expressing his love for his children and grandchildren, he exhibited a deep interest in their accomplishments. Gracious and appreciative, George found joy in life’s small pleasures and gestures. A brief 2-minute phone call was enough to bring him joy for days. Engaging with a new book kept him occupied for 24 hours until he eagerly awaited the next one. He appreciated drop-offs at Delaware Park and expressed gratitude for visitors, especially when they brought gummy candy and scratch-offs.

George is survived by his children, Donald Bowdoin (Kristen), George (Azucena), and Liz Applegate (Jeff), along with his six grandchildren, Tyler, Savannah, Trevor, Britney, Bella and Jack.

As we commemorate George, let us reflect on the warmth and connection he brought to our lives, a testament to a life well-lived and deeply cherished.

A celebration of life will be planned in the future.
