Earl R Smiddy, Jr., 87, of Wilmington, Delaware passed away on January 5, 2024, surrounded by his family.
A resident of Wilmington for almost 60 years, Earl was born in Framingham, Massachusetts to Earl and Agnes Smiddy and raised in Southborough, Massachusetts. He graduated from Saint Mark’s Preparatory School, and received an engineering degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. He subsequently earned a master’s degree in Applied Statistics from Villanova University.
After working for General Electric in New York State, he moved to Wilmington and worked for the DuPont company as a computer systems specialist for nearly 30 years. He was also a longtime mathematics instructor at Delaware Technical Community College.
He was a skilled handyman and operated several rental properties in Wilmington. Most significantly, he was a devoted father to his four children of which he was always very proud, never missing one of their significant events. He was a longtime volunteer swimming official during their local swimming careers.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, and his four children, William (Julie), Donna (Steve Butz), Linda (David Nelson), and David (Lynn). He also had 16 grandchildren – Joseph, Robert, Matthew, Rebecca, Susan, Andrew, Samuel, Clara, Rose, Craig, Sarah, Jenna, Gregory, Brandon, Jason, and Thomas – and six great-grandchildren- Priscilla, Heidi, Benjamin, George, Matteo, and Josie.
