Benjamin Powell

Benjamin Gabriel Powell, age 95, of Wilmington, Delaware passed away in the early morning hours of November 26th, 2023 with his family by his side. Born in December of 1927 in Chester, PA, moved to Delaware in 1960 where he lived until his death.

After graduating high school he joined the Navy at 16 years old. As a machinist mate, he cruised the South Pacific for 5 years.

Ben worked at the BP oil refinery in Trainer, PA retiring at age 55 as a rotating equipment specialist. He stayed on as a contractor organizing the rotating equipment parts for seven more years.

Ben was a proud member of Delaware Veterans Post #1, and was the president of R.O.W. Club. He is predeceased by his loving wife Marilyn and daughter Donna Lee. He is survived by his son Brian Powell (Tina), daughter Cathleen Ramsey (Jerry), four grandchildren, Sean, Linde, Matthew, and Meghan and four great grandchildren.

Funeral Services

A brief Committal Service will take place on Friday December 22, 2023, at 1:00PM at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.

    My family and I are so sorry for your loss our condolences thoughts and prayers to Cathy and the whole family, We moved across the street from Ben and Marilyn 23 years ago we have very fond memories of them both always getting dressed up for Halloween to give out candy to the kids in our neighborhood and always decorating for Christmas, they were wonderful people and friends and neighbors I remember one time in the winter Ben had just bought his snow thrower and I was out shoveling my driveway sidewalk and the street for parking when people came over Ben had just finished his house with the snow and came across the street and asked what are you doing and I said shoveling and he said watch out I will finish for you and we were so grateful for what he had done I just wanted to send our condolences and thoughts and prayers to the family, they were one of a kind and awesome neighbors and people๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

    So sorry to hear about Ben. He will always be remembered as "one of the truly great guys" at the refinery. When I trained as a Boilermaker, he was our main instructor. I couldn't believe the amount of knowledge he possessed and passed on to the rest of us. His patience was remarkable, as some of us were not always easy to deal with. I can picture him as a kind soul, teaching mechanics in Heaven. We are all better for having him in our lives. Rest in peace, Ben.

    Brian and family. So sorry to lose such a wonderful person. Benny was my mentor when i started in the machine dept at BP Oil in the 70s.Benny was man that not only supervised repairs on rotating equipment , but taught many to understand safety in the refinery. Many said, he was a man the knew everything. Benny was greatly missed when he retired and now will be missed forever. RIP. May his family find peace though this sad time.
