Dorothy Pappas passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at the age of 93. Dorothy was born in New York City to native Greek parents Georgia and James Demetrakopoulas (Demont) on February 6, 1930 and lived in Wilmington, DE for over sixty-five years. She graduated from New Haven State Teacher’s College and henceforth joined the United States Navy, serving as an ensign stationed in New York City.
Dorothy married her high school crush Nicholas Pappas. Together as partners they navigated through life for over sixty years. They travelled the world, bringing along children and grandchildren whenever possible. They thrived on creating magical holiday celebrations for their children and grandchildren, as well as hosting extended family reunions at their beach house in Avalon, NJ and Aruba.
Dorothy was an avid reader, with piles of books to recommend and lend. She was an excellent and curious cook who always seemed to be trying new recipes on guests. As a lifetime member of the Greek Orthodox Church, Dorothy loved her church life and served in various church organizations over her many years, starting as a young adult in the choir, the Daughters of Penelope and Philoptochos.
Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband Nicholas, and is survived by her children Thalia, Christopher (Susan), Gregory, and Nikki (James), nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 2nd from 11:00 am to 12 pm followed by a funeral service at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church; 808 North Broom Street in Wilmington, DE. The burial service will take place immediately following at Silverbrook Cemetery.
