Conrad Schwalm

Conrad A. Schwalm, age 85, of Glen Mills, PA passed away at home on Wednesday, October 4, 2023. Conrad was born in September 1938 in Chicago, IL to Albert and Ida Schwalm and was the eldest of six children. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University and University of Illinois, where he graduated from dental school in 1967. He earned a Master’s degree in Prosthodontics from the University of Washington in 1974. While at Illinois Wesleyan he met his wife-to-be Marjorie Ann on a blind date.

Conrad joined the U.S. Public Health Service in 1967 and served in Baltimore, Mobile, Seattle, Staten Island and Governor’s Island before settling in Rockville, MD for 35 years and working at Coast Guard HQ in Washington D.C. Conrad retired from the USPHS as a Captain in 1989. He set up his own dental practice in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he happily treated many patients until his second retirement in 2018. Conrad and Marjorie moved to Glen Mills, PA in 2020.

Conrad was passionate about his work as a prosthodontist and always said that he “loved every minute of it”; he considered his staff and patients his friends and spoke fondly of them until he passed away. Conrad was a car enthusiast and enjoyed owning and maintaining cars, including restoring a 1970 red Mustang convertible and driving his Porsche on sunny days. He was always on the move, puttering about the house fixing this or that, or working on the computer. He loved chocolate, and plain M&M’s or German chocolate cake will always remind us of him. Conrad loved his time spent with family and friends, especially at their beach house in Bethany Beach.

Conrad is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie Ann; his children Scott Schwalm (Dawna) and Susan Rickert (Mike); his grandchildren Dustan Schwalm (Lexie), Hallie Schmitz (Zac), Amanda Rickert and Tim Rickert. He is also survived by sisters Caron Fulton, Hope O’Keefe (Brad), brother Edwin Schwalm (Kitty), sister-in-law Anita Schwalm, and many nieces and nephews. Connie was predeceased by his parents Albert and Ida Schwalm, brother and sister-in-law Robert and Linda Schwalm, brother-in-law Leslie Fulton, and brother Paul Schwalm.

Dr. Scwalm was a wonderful person, and a great boss for 33 years of my life. I thought about him and Margie many times after he retired. Was definitely blessed to have worked closely with him. Was a great time of my life. God Bless you Dr. Schwalm!

At this moment there are no words that can express the loss of the family, however, I can’t say that Dr. Schwalm was an amazing man, dentist, friend and employer. I will treasure every single piece of advice, and I am so thankful for the great opportunity of having worked with him for over 15 years.

Deepest sympathy. Dr Schwalm was my mentor, I used to say he was my residency director for 5 years after leaving the Army and before buying my practice-just down the road. He helped me to achieve Mastership in the AGD. We would wax and cast gold and mount many cases. He wasn’t very fond of my CEREC/CAD CAM, but I think he would be impressed with the gold crowns that I scan now. I am pretty sure they would meet his approval and warrant a smile and a tap on the shoulder. I was thankful to be able to say good by to him at our study club meeting before he moved to Delaware, and to share a hug! I attribute much if not most of my success to his patience in teaching me his skill, knowledge, expertise. He was always willing to give advise on cases. It is funny that I started to volunteer at the Catholic Charities Dental Clinic , which was the former location of St Andrew’s. And this past year I started to attend St Andrew’s. There have been former patients that have seen me and have asked if Dr Schwalm. I am thankful for all the talent Dr Schwalm shared with me and I will treasure the memories. I hope that my dentistry will reflect the hours he spent training/teaching me. I suspect his work will live on through the many hands he trained! Thanks for the golden molar you made for me!

Connie was a famous joke teller. The smile in the picture above is the one I always remember when he got to the end of a story or the punch line. He will be greatly missed. I loved him.

When I talk about my neighborhood to family and friends, Connie’s name was generally mentioned. Many days and nights were spent in the pool swimming the summer away. He would join my kids in the pool waning to help teach them to swim and dive. At Halloween, we could count on toothpaste and a new toothbrush followed by an annual checkup at his office. Connie graciously gave his time to help me fix things around my house or stop for a quick chat at the end of our driveways after work. The admiration and love he exuded spilled over to my family. Connie, you are an example of God’s love and we will always love you!!

I was Active Duty Coast Guard and worked as Dr Schwalm’s assistant at the Coast Guard HQ Clinic from 1986-1989. He was quite the character, but also a perfectionist and sometimes would intimidate me, but I also had a pretty thin skin back then. I ended up being the better for it. My condolences to the family…although it’s been quite a long time, I do remember him talking about them frequently. So sorry for your loss.

Connie was my oldest living friend. We were confirmed together at Trinity Lutheran in Lansing, IL. His family owned a gravel pit that served as a great play-pen for Connie, his brothers and me. I knew him as a very smart, charming, warm, loving individual. My one regret is that we spent very little time together as adults. It was an honor to call him friend.
