Margaret Cupp Chandler died on July 19th, 2023 at Cokesbury Village, Hockessin, Delaware.
She was born in Richmond, Virginia, to Harvey and Lula Eanes Cupp in 1924. She moved with her family to Mifflintown, Pennsylvania, in 1927 where she received her early education. In 1944, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Penn State University where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and Alpha Lambda Delta honorary society. She moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where she worked as an analytical chemist for the DuPont Company at the Experimental Station. There she met Leonard “Gus” Chandler, and in 1947, they were married at Immanuel Episcopal Church, Highlands, and moved to Hockessin, Delaware, where they lived for three years. They then moved to Liftwood in Brandywine Hundred and lived in the same house for fifty years until their move to Cokesbury Village.
Margaret was always interested in music and enjoyed playing the violin and choral singing with various church choirs, the Cappella Club at Grace Methodist Church, and the Northern Delaware Oratorio Society. She was a Girl Scout and a troop leader for many years. She was a lifelong Episcopalian and enjoyed her time as a Sunday school teacher, Lay Reader and Eucharistic Assistant, Vestry member, and choir member. In her later days at Cokesbury, she was active in the Spiritual Life Committee. She also spent many years as a volunteer at the Episcopal Church Home and as a driver for FISH. Needlework was a special interest: sewing, knitting, needlepoint, and especially smocking dresses for granddaughters. She also enjoyed square dancing with the First State Squares.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Eleanor Renninger, her brothers, Harvey Cupp and David Britten Cupp, and her daughter-in-law Judah Chandler. She is survived by her three children, David Chandler of Newark, Delaware, John Chandler (Bonnie Chandler) of Harvard, Massachusetts, and Dorothy Saynisch (Michael Saynisch) of Haddonfield, New Jersey. Her grandchildren, Holly Chandler, Cedric Chandler (Crystal Chandler), Philip Saynisch (Heather Robertson) and Olivia Saynisch (Scott Arnott) survive her as do her great grandchildren, Aralynn and August Chandler. Also surviving are her nieces and nephews Steven Cupp, Melanie Summers, Harvey Cupp, Marna Whittington, Lynn Goebel, and David Cupp, and their families.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, August 19th, 2023, at 11:00 AM, in the Cokesbury Village auditorium, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE with a reception to follow in the lower atrium at Cokesbury Village.
