Andrew J. “Joe” Schmidt

Andrew J. Schmidt, age 93, a long time resident of Hockessin, Delaware and a native Delawarean died on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 in Glen Mills, PA where he was a resident of Maris Grove Senior Living community since January 2015.

Joe was born in the city of New Castle, son of the late John L. Schmidt, Sr. and Clara N. Volk Schmidt.

In the spring of 1950, Joe received his “Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship” and “Printer Diploma” from the International Typographical Union of North America. He started his printing career at the Wilmington Sunday Star, which included his apprenticeship. In August of that year he joined The News Journal Company where he enjoyed 39 years as a printer and photoengraver. In the early years he was a linotype operator, which he thoroughly enjoyed – “The best Keyboard!”

In April 1951, during the Korean War, Joe was inducted into the U.S.Army and assigned head of the proof room for the Pacific Stars and Stripes stationed in Tokyo, Japan. In August of the same year, prior to leaving for Japan, he married Louise Loveless, his wife of 57 years.

To his family and friends Joe was known as “Jovial Joe” as he always had a smile on his face. He enjoyed (outside of newspapers) country music, e-mailing friends and family and, since childhood, baseball, baseball, baseball.

In addition to his parents and wife Louise, he is predeceased by his three siblings, John L. Schmidt Jr., John C. Whittington and Mildred C. Hopkins.

Interment will be in the Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church Memory Garden. Joe was a member of the church since 1959.
