Joell Sanders Bacchieri

Joell Sanders Bacchieri, age 55, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 18, 2023, surrounded by her two beloved sons and family.

Joell was born in Baltimore, MD, in July of 1967, to James Sanders and Diane (Smith) Bayless. She graduated from Indian River High School in Frankford, DE in 1985, and went on to graduate from the University of Delaware in 1991. She started her career at MBNA, where she met the love of her life, Robert Craig Bacchieri. The two were wed in Wareham, MA at Bob’s parents’ home on June 12, 1993. They went on to raise two handsome sons, Leo James and Max Anthony, in the greater Newark, DE area. Joell was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, which she fought and successfully treated. In late 2015, she was again diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. She fought for over seven years to continue to be with her two sons, family, and friends.

Her two boys were the light of her life. She loved nothing more than to spend time with them and to watch them achieve success. She was their biggest cheerleader as they played rugby throughout high school and college. In efforts to keep them in shape, she enjoyed cooking and baking. Although her food was delicious, no two attempts at a recipe turned out the same. She treasured getting together with her many girlfriends, whether it was to gossip with them at lunch or to lounge out by the pool. She looked forward to vacationing in Rehoboth, DE and Naples, FL with family. She was a lover of nature, flowers, and animals, holding Rastis, Dock, and Nathan near and dear to her heart. James Taylor and Cat Stevens were among her favorite musicians, of whom she listened to while tending to her gardens. Joell was kind and caring, but was never afraid to tell you how she felt. She was powerfully persistent until her final days.

Joell is survived by her two loving sons, Leo James and Max Anthony; her sister, Prudence Downes and husband, Mickey; her sister-in-law, Stacey Bacchieri, niece, Krista, and nephew, Nolan; and her sister-in-law, Karen Roberson, and husband, Dwayne.

Joell is preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Craig Bacchieri; her parents, James Sanders and Diane Bayless; mother and father-in-law, Carol and Leo Bacchieri; and her brother-in-law, Gregg Bacchieri.

A service will be held on Saturday, June 24, at noon at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. Burial will be held privately at a later date. Friends may visit with the family at Chandler Funeral Home on Saturday, June 24, from 11 am to noon.

I never met Joell in person but loved all of her beautiful photos on the wall at Jimmy and Leslie's house, and I remember how lovingly Jimmy spoke of her and the boys. When my sister-in-law got breast cancer, Joell was gracious enough to communicate with her and share her experience. My heartfelt condolences to Prudence and the boys.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I knew Joell from high school. She was a great person and was always kind and helpful to others. I lost contact with her when she went off to college, but I know she was a strong woman to have gone through what she went through. Cancer is not a good thing to go through. I know because I lost my father from it. I just wished that she could have beaten it for good especially for her family. I'm sorry again for your loss to her family and friends

My heart breaks for her family; such a nice obituary - she deerly loved her friends and family, especially her sons Leo and Max - she was so very proud of them both. Her smile would warm your heart - such a beautiful person. Very few people lived more bravely, fought more courageously and lived more passionately. She will be missed.
