Fred Guy Hendershot, age 77, passed away peacefully at Christiana Care Hospital in Newark on Saturday, June 10, 2023, after a short illness.
Fred was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, in 1945, where he was raised by his grandmother. In his early adulthood he resided at Stockley Center in Georgetown, DE, and moved to The Mary Campbell Center in Wilmington in 1978. He was among the first residents of the center, which was built to provide a home-like setting for people with disabilities.
Fred lived a good life at The Mary Campbell Center, where he participated in a variety of programs that kept him healthy, happy, and engaged for 45 years. He was active in the Special Olympics for decades, earning multiple medals in bocce. He also participated in S.O.’s Motorized Activity Training Program. As a member of Troop #503, based at the center, Fred pursued a life-long dream and earned his Eagle Scout badge in 2018. He was also a devoted member of Faith Presbyterian Church.
His perpetual smile, big heart, and positive disposition will be missed by fellow residents, staff, and the many friends he made along the way.
A memorial service will be held at The Mary Campbell Center, 4641 Weldin Road, Wilmington, Delaware 19803 on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at 2:00 PM.
