John Peter Gerard Kehoe

John Peter Gerard Kehoe, age 79, of Chadds Ford, PA, passed away June 2, 2023, after a brief stay in hospital.

Born in Salford, England to Eileen (O’Shea) and John Gerard “Gerry” Kehoe, Peter excelled in academics and athletics at his beloved boarding school in Ireland, the Cistercian College of Roscrea. Peter married his first and only love, Biddy 57 years ago. He met her at age 16 in their hometown of Tralee, Ireland, thanks to an introduction planned by their siblings Kerry and Sarah who foresaw their connection. Peter lost her but once, due to his failure to write enough letters while both attended boarding school. But once they had both returned to Tralee, he made sure he didn’t lose her for long, as he followed her until she took him back.

After earning his undergraduate degree from University College Dublin, Peter pursued advanced degrees in chemical engineering at UCD and across the Atlantic at Yale University, where he and Biddy started their family. During the birth of their first child (Breffni), Peter and the obstetrician discovered they had both attended Roscrea, and fell quickly into a discussion of their memories, much to the frustration of the woman in labor. Despite this somewhat ill-timed meeting, Peter and Biddy would become good friends with Dr. Noel McCarthy, who also delivered their second child, Cormac.

After the birth of his first two sons, Peter and Biddy recrossed the Atlantic, where Peter pursued post doctoral work at UCD and Cambridge University , and welcomed a third son, Lochlann. Shortly thereafter, Peter moved his young family to the United States to work for DuPont in 1973. In 1977, Biddy and Peter welcomed their daughter Ciara to their family.
Peter’s career at DuPont spanned 35+ years, starting as a laboratory manager and ending as a managing director, with posts in Wilmington, DE, Wilmington, NC, Richmond, VA before returning to the Wilmington DE area, settling in Chadds Ford, PA in the 1980s. His career featured large amounts of travel abroad, including a stint living in Harrogate.
Peter was an avid rugby player, playing into his 40s before transitioning to play soccer to save his remaining teeth. He instilled a deep love for soccer in his entire family and coached both girls and boys teams. Peter played in three Munster Junior Cups in his youth and as an adult helped build the men’s and women’s rugby clubs at University of Delaware as coach of the women’s side and player-coach for the men’s side in the 1970s.

Ever the story teller, Peter often brought the dinner table to tears of laughter with childhood tales of the Nigerian Sultan of Sokoto, being descended from the Prince of Iveragh, and tobacco trucks in Tralee. Neither a conversation nor a glass ever went empty with him.

Peter is survived by his wife of 56 years, Brigid “Biddy” (Horgan) Kehoe, his children John Breffni (Vince), Cormac, Lochlann (Eileen), and Ciara, as well as his grandchildren Declan, Brody, Finn, Chloe, Liam, and Madeleine. Peter is also survived by his younger brother and lifelong partner in mischief Patrick William Kerry Kehoe.
RIP Peter, and don’t forget to dance.

The very first time we met was in Taiwan, you were on a business trip and treated us to a very expensive dinner. I remember Breffni was so nervous that you might find out who he lived with. Later, you kindly and with a generous heart welcomed me into your family, and so did mum. Thank you for demonstrating what good fatherhood is, I’m totally learning from you. Love Vince

Biddy, You might remember me. Peter and I and indeed Kerry were in University Hall when we were in U.C.D. I visited you in Yale about 1969 when I worked in Toronto. I went to Yale with U.C.D Rugby Club in 1986, when I met Kerry by chance at a frat party one night. Kerry put me in touch with Samantha Power(Obama connection) and I had breakfast with her in Yale. Samantha’s father Jim was a close friend of my brother- both medics. Peter was one of the great guys. So sorry to hear of his passing. Pat Dublin Ireland

The world has lost a truly great and humble person. Peter mentored many of us at DuPont (although he would likely deny it, with a smile), and through his example showed us what it meant to be a firm and principled leader, peer, and friend. He was also a great storyteller, a sign of a life well lived. May our fond memories of Peter live on through his family and friends and those whose lives he touched.

It was only after leaving Roscrea that we really got to know Peter who was a power behind the many reunions of the 61 Class. Too bad that he just passes so soon after his close classmate Joe Doherty. They hitched hiked together, almost penniless through Spain after doing Leaving Cert in which Peter got first in Ireland. Yes a great academic and sports man. We will all miss him dearly.

I had the privilege of attending Peter’s Mass of celebration in Wilmington today. I was honoured to represent the CCR Class of ‘61. It was no surprise that all three eulogies emphasized his kindness and generosity as a husband, father , grandfather and human being in addition to his humility. Condolences to Biddy , Kerry and his wonderful family

Heartfelt condolences to Biddy and family. I was six years behind Peter and the rest of the famous "Class of 61" but they were famous and hailed as the benchmark in every way, academic, sporting, cultural etc., and he was top of that very high tree! I met Peter several times at reunions and New York dinners: he always wore his prestige and his brilliance lightly. A true gentleman. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

    Christopher Murray writes,
Kathleen and I send our deep sympathy to Biddy and family over the loss of Peter. Although he died suddenly, following a cruel illness, he had a full and happy life. We first met him during his first year at Yale, at lunchtime, when we instantly became friends. He was lonely, as he told us, because his young wife Biddy could not join him until she had finished her degree as radiologist at Trinity College Dublin. We met almost daily then, until the great day when Biddy joined him and we took instantly to her as well. The friendship we formed then lasted a lifetime. They did us the honor of asking me to be godfather to their third child, Loughlin, born in Cambridge (England). Unfortunately, this was a rare error on Peter's part, as I was the most useless godfather any child ever had. But I was forgiven, and in later years Peter would always call after he landed in Ireland and arranged generous to a fault in his hospitality as host. Later on we had the joy of meeting Biddy again also, and her youngest, Ciara, for the first time, a brilliant student and a lovely young woman. It was easy to see that Peter was crazy about her. Even though COVID put an end to our meeting we kept in touch, and were shocked to hear of Peter's illness and death. We shall miss him terribly.
