Jean E. Mullin

Jean Eckles Mullin, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Stonegates, Greenville, Delaware where she was a resident for the last ten years. She was born in 1930 in Wilmington, Delaware.

Growing up at her Knollwood home, Jean loved experiencing country life as a child. She made annual visits to Menominee in the upper Peninsula of Michigan where her maternal Grandparents (Spies) had deep roots and made important contributions towards the industrial growth of Menominee. In recent years she followed and shared her early Menominee experiences to social media sites covering the history of Menominee.

Jean was arguably an expert on the Wilmington school scene, having at various times attended Sanford, Tower Hill, and Tatnall. Perhaps tiring of all that powerhouse education, she finished her college preparation at Greenwood School, Ruxton, Maryland. Her college years were spent at Edgewood Park School for Girls in Briarcliff Manor, NY. where she studied early childhood education.

The stage was set in 1952 for the many high points of Jean’s life when she met and married James T. Mullin and started her family. Her life was focused on raising and educating her children and later the joys of being both a grand and great grandmother. She never wavered in providing nurture and guidance to her last day.

Jean is survived by her daughters Margaret (Donald) MacKelcan, of Wilmington; Carol (Neil) Holzman, of Birmingham, Alabama, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her husband, James T. Mullin, in 1992 and her daughter, Lisa Mullin, in 2019.

A gracious lady has passed on. Fond memories of this wonderful neighbor as I grew up in Alapocas. Quick smile and laughter. Jean would giggle as I would serenade with Oliver’s song “Jean”. My sympathy to you all . Much love always. Margaret, Carol and to the memory of Lisa, and Jimmy. Willard Glenn

Robert Abel Jr lit a candle and writes,
Dear family members, Jean was one of the most marvelous people whom I have meet. She was so generous, courageous and wise beyond her years. It was a privilege for anyone who came within her orbit, and all were encouraged. We do not encounter many who are truly generous and grateful, and Jean's legacy wil remain in my heart and deeds. My deepest condolences.
